Stereotypes - Pg 94
This page covers what the term stereotypes actually means; i found it important to understand the terms and its meanings better as my independant study's actual question is to do with stereotypes.
I learnt that there are many different characteristics of stereotypes.
Stereotypes are and have usually been used as terms to describe certain groups of people (black, white etc)
Stereotypes can be anything from people to actual things.
Groups which can be stereotyped are:
Age, Sex, Race, Religion, Vocation, Nationality, Places and things.
Theorists to Consider - Pg 92/93
Propp = His attitudes and beliefs towards the usage of characters and certain character roles.
Levi Strauss = Binary oppositions - Sam and Trife
Rolande Barthes = Enigma codes, the way they are created and how they help the audience resolve the story.
Todorov's Narrative structures.
Gender Studies - Pg 108/109
Feminist Theory
The male Gaze = This links to another part in the book (relationship of women in film Pg 147) As women are used in a certain way to sell the films.
Gender as Performance
Gender As Lifestyle
Representation - Pg 30/31 8/9
The different types of way representation are affected.
This plays a major part to my independent study as i am talking about the representation of youths.
10 Media Words
This sis a point in a narrative, following the climax or emotional high point, which lets down or deflates the experience, leaving the audience with a sense of disappointment.
=When Trife dies in the end.
B = Buddy Movie
This is a film that focuses on the relationship between two characters.
=The movie is based on both Alisa and Trife.
C = Cliff Hanger
A text which ends with an-resolved dilemma.
=Trife's death is made un-clear.
D = Demonisation
Sensational media reporting that turns individuals or groups into folk devils and makes them the focus of moral manic.
=All of the youths are represented in negative ways and link to negative stereotypes.
E = Ellipsis
The removal of shortening of elements of a narrative to speed up the action.
= Instead of long separate scenes of everyone, when Katie commits suicide, we see split screens of all the different characters.
F = Femme Fatale
A female character who uses her sexuality, to achieve the ends she desires.
= Becky decides to use oral sex as a way to get money for shopping.
G = Gangster
Describes a film genre based around the activities of a criminal gang/s.
=Trevors uncle is a gangster who is trying to influence his nephew to also lead a life of crime.
H = Hero
The principle male or female protagonist in any narrative.
=This is Trife, as this is a main story which is based around him.
L = Low-budget Film
A film made with limited funds.
=There was no major production company behind Kidulthood, as there would be in a massive Hollywood movie such as 'American Pie.'
M = Male Gaze
Laura Mulvey's theory of what she saw as the Male P.O.V
= Becky and Alisa are seen as sex objects on screen to entertain the male audience

Online Research
This link explains a little about what stereotypes really are and how they are not all negative stereotypes/ This will help me with my independent study because of the fact that most of my study is actually based around Stereotypes of youths.
This link explains where the word originated from. It is a term used to explain women who use their sexuality to gain what they need. This is wise information to use in terms of research and being able to Link it back to my actual study.
This link explains how youths are being attacked and demonised everyday over issues which could be a very small thing being turned into something major because of the fact that they want to target these youths in a negative way. This is an article which shows how there is nothing.
This link is also an article form the Daily mirror. It talks about how a teenage boy shot down 7 people. This kind of relates to the text because of the fact that we could see Sam as the one to do something like this.
This link shows basic information about how teenagers are being steretyped continuosly. They are continuously represented in negative ways and are seen as an easy target.

We both deicded to look at Laura Mulveys 'Male Gaze' theory in depth so we could relate what she thinks back to our text.
I found this link which explains what the gaze really is. This will be usuful to help with my text as i am foccussing on Becky. In kidulthood, it feels as if everythign that Becky does, is all for a purpose. And this pupose seems as though she is only there to entertain males.

This is another link which also helps indertsand Laura Mulvey's thory. I personally think taht she will be a Theorist who i should include in my independant study because of the fact that Becky is seen as everything that the male gaze is about.
http://www.aber.ac.uk/media/Documents/gaze/gaze09.html
As well as this, we also decided to look at Represenation of women as a whole in the way that they are represented in films etc. This is through the way they act, dress and come across to one another and the audience.

Blog Buddies
We will both focus on how the teenagers are influenced due to certain issues in society as well as our research also being similar as each others.
My blog buddy from the other class, has to be decided.
10 Key Words Again!
Human interest - A topic that appeals to the audience = Many teenagers would enjoy this movie, but would not necessarily relate to it.
Social realism: representation of characters and issues to raise serious issues - In kidulthood we face issues such as Teenage pregnancy and Gun crime etc.
Resolution - When a problem created in the movie is resolved at the end = in this case its Trife and Alisa getting back together.
Target Audience- Intended audience for a media product. In this case we would see the primary audience as teenagers themselves and a secondary audience of parents.
Ideology - Belief and Value of Something discussed by a group of people. Some people may relate to kidulthood whereas otters will feel its to exaggerated.
Power - Controlling of certain groups in society = this would be seen as a role Sam follows as he is in charge of the playground.
Sexism - Discrimination on the basis of sex = The way the girls are represented in the text is shown as negative.
Deviance - Acts that are unaccepted in society = Many people would disagree with what they see in Kidulthood, and would think of it as a completely negative representation of what teenagers really are like.

Essay On Clip
The Mise-en-scene moves on from the shop onto the streets of West London, from a typical issue of a young teenager threatening a shop owner, moving onto the whole gang going to retrieve something from an enemy, knowing that when they do go, they are bound to go UN noticed ad they will be in trouble.This scene almost instantly portrays to us, the kind of way males are represented, in a strong approach, hence the fact that we see Trife, Moony and Jay going to Sam's house.On the other hand, whilst the boys are causing havoc and mayhem, the girls aren't really shown as sweet angels either. We see Becky and Alisa getting ready to go out and get 'Smashed' not really a good thing to do for a teenager who has just found out that she is pregnant.All of the kids are represented as very different people to one another. We see Claire all loved up about Jay and giving her self away as an easy target. The movie is male dominated; we see this as Sam has got an awful lot of control over Claire, who even after listening to his threats is still with him. This brings in a controversial issue in society today of domestic violence. Why on Earth would a young girl be with someone who bosses her around and telling her what to do, what not to do, who she can and can’t see? Because the males in the movie are shown as more controlotive and powerful, where the girls are shown as 'Easy' (sex wise) and represented as 'Sex objects.' The way we see all of the teenagers acting in this clip shows us how youths are stereotypes in many different ways. A clear example is how males are always shown as stronger than girls and Girls weaker. Black males are represented in negative ways and shown caught up in thing such as gun crime and drugs. White girls are shown as 'Sex mad' or seen as a whore, which is not a nice label for a girl.Overall, this clip will help me answer my question as it relates to what I need to prove in order to answer successfully.

Media Key Terms
Flashbacks - Another technique used in Kidulthood. A clear, effective example is in the end, when we see Alisa drinking alcohol and sitting in the middle of an alley way and we also see Trevor when he is with his uncle. They are both having regrets and thinking about what they have done which is portrayed through this specific technique.
Hero - Every movie has a hero, in this movie we can relate to how the hero was Trevor because of the fact that we see a lot of things from his point of view and how he goes about on a normal day etc. We are focusing more on his life and his troubles.
Binary opposition - The differences shown between two people/ Good vs. Evil. In kidulthood we see Sam and Trevor as enemies and because of the way they go about doing things this is reflected on they're personality.
Representation - The way people/places are perceived. In kidulthood we see the characters are shown in negative roles and the places are seen as 'run down areas' where we would expect people from a low income background to come from.
Protagonist - Lead role in a movie, We see Trevor as the main protagonist as he is the one who is shown facing a lot of difficulties and wants to change the way he is living but cannot because of the society he lives in etc.
Racism - Involving social and economic discrimination; we see racism in a clip when Moony, Jay and Trevor are going down a street corner and they bump into some boys. The boys decide to argue and Jay then adds 'Is it because I'm a Skinhead white boy?.'
Deviance - This means unacceptable behaviour which goes against the norms and values of the society. Related to kidulthood as there are many things which the teenagers all do that would be seen as inappropriate (Underage drinking, taking drugs, Causing arguments etc)
Cliff hanger - Where the audience is left un-known about what happens next etc. This usually happens in soaps and dramas shown on telvision so that the next episode can continue from the previous one. In the end when we see Trevor have a flashback and he passes out. We don't know if he actually dies or not because it was not shown clearly in the movie.
Non Linear Narrative - The movie does not contain a flowing narrative because of the fact that it contains flashbacks which informs us about the happenings within the 24 hours.

This is an ex A2 students blog. I found this very useful whilst reading through. As its the same movie as mine i can relate to the theorists and the way this student focuses on the representation of young girls i can include this in my research and link back to my question and relate to the representations about youths.

Bullet Boy Trailer Info
This movie shows us lifr from Rickys eyes and similar to kidulthood where we see everything from Trifes POV.
The trailer uses many different camera angles to add and create realism. Like kidulthood this movie was also made using a light weight camera as we can see some low key lighted shots in this trailer. The use of realism and authenticty is created by using this effect.

ReSeaRch ProPoSaL
Title - ‘How are Stereotypes of Youths from Ethnical backgrounds shown in particular reference to Kidulthood?'
Hypothesis - There are many different stereotypes, Youths who are black are shown as typical 'Bad Boys' who are caught up in a world of crime. Girls are shown as more concerned about Sex, taking drugs and Underage drinking.
M – Characters are boys and girls, shown at school and a typical day for them. The movie is set in an urbanised area also referred to as 'The GHETTO'
I – Teenagers are all shown in negative ways. Boys are shown as more powerful over girls.
G - Drama
R – The representation of youths is shown in negative ways. They are all shown leading and following a life of crime.
A- Primary audience are teenagers who may relate to what happens in the movie. Parents are the secondary audience as they will see what youths of today are involved in.
I – BBC
N – The movie focuses on 7 individuals, Sam, Trife, Moony, Jay, Claire, Alisa and Becky. We get a chance to see how they live and the difficulties they all have to face.
Wider context
More issues are being raised in the society about how youths behave. The way they are shown behaving in Kidulthood would not be accepted today.
The representation of youths has changed so much since the past where all youths were concerned about was to gain a good education which would benefit them to have a good future, but this movie shows the complete opposite.
Theorists
Prop- The hero is Trife because he is shown as the protagonist. Trife faces many difficulties and has to go through rough times (mainly because of his uncle who is not a very good role model)
Levi Strauss - Binary Opposition is shown between Trife and Sam
Other texts:
Bullet Boy (2005) - Shows relevant issues, especially in the end when Ashley Walters is shot.
Get Rich Or Die Trying(2005) - Curtis Jackson is shown as a black male who struggles to make it big in the music industry. He is surrounded by stereotyped black males who do not want him to succeed. The film follows kidulthood as it involves gun crime and drugs.

Who is being represented?
"Teenagers from Different Etnical Backgrounds"
The text I have chosen is 'KiDULTHOOD' This movie shows us many different teenagers, from different backgrounds, all connecting to one another through different ways. There are many serious issues in this movie which will be seen as every-day-to day things for these teenagers.
In what way?
All the teenagers are shown in Negative ways. The girls are shown as sex objects and the boys are related to crime one way or another. Girls care more about sex than any thing else and the boys have adapted to a life of crime which they follow throught the course of the movie.
By whom?
Why is the subject being represented in this way?
The youths are shown in this way so that the audience can see how much has changed from the past. By showing the kids in a negative role we see how they are naive and influenced by the most stupidist things.
Is the representation fair and accurate?
Yes, we could say the representation is fair because it does cover teh issues going down in society today but then again it is not as it is not what is happening in every single area. it is not accurate because the movie only shows 1 part of similar people and covers there lives but does nto focus that much on others lives.
What opportunities exist for self-representation by the subject?
Media Languages and Forms
aunthenticity and relaism created by the shots used such as hig angled. Low key/hihgh key lighting is used to enhance this effect.

15-year-old Trife is facing a crossroads in his life. His uncle is tempting him with fast money, easy women and the gangster lifestyle; while his girlfriend Alisa (RED MADRELL) offers an escape to perhaps a better life. Trife must make a choice. But with word spreading that Alisa has slept with someone else, will he make the right one? Along with Jay and Moony, he also has the school bully Sam (NOEL CLARKE) to contend with. Sam is out for revenge after Jay steals his girlfriend Claire (Madeline Fairley) who he has been physically abusing and the threesome humiliate and beat him in his own house.
Trife’s girlfriend Alisa is also having a bad day. She’s just learnt that she’s pregnant. But her best friend Becky (JAMIE WINSTONE) is only interested in dragging her out on a drug and shopping binge. With the brother of dead Katie set on revenge and everyone heading to the same party, the scene is set for a decisive collision. It’s step up or back down time…
A harrowing, shocking story that finds humour in its narrative and set to a blistering UK Hip Hop and Grime soundtrack, KIDULTHOOD is a new kind of British film.
Based on real kids. Real stories. This is real life.

The clip finishes when Jay goes into the shop and ends up throwing a beer bottle at the shop keeper because the shop keeper is not allowing him to purchase the beer.
All three of these clips are related as they all show violent behaviour which is being caused by youths from different ethical backgrounds
