Book Research

Media Studies AS + A2 by Jacquie Bennett, Published in 2005

Stereotypes - Pg 94
This page covers what the term stereotypes actually means; i found it important to understand the terms and its meanings better as my independant study's actual question is to do with stereotypes.
I learnt that there are many different characteristics of stereotypes.
Stereotypes are and have usually been used as terms to describe certain groups of people (black, white etc)
Stereotypes can be anything from people to actual things.
Groups which can be stereotyped are:
Age, Sex, Race, Religion, Vocation, Nationality, Places and things.

Theorists to Consider - Pg 92/93
Propp = His attitudes and beliefs towards the usage of characters and certain character roles.
Levi Strauss = Binary oppositions - Sam and Trife
Rolande Barthes = Enigma codes, the way they are created and how they help the audience resolve the story.
Todorov's Narrative structures.

Gender Studies - Pg 108/109
Feminist Theory
The male Gaze = This links to another part in the book (relationship of women in film Pg 147) As women are used in a certain way to sell the films.
Gender as Performance
Gender As Lifestyle

Representation - Pg 30/31 8/9
The different types of way representation are affected.
This plays a major part to my independent study as i am talking about the representation of youths.

10 Media Words

A = Anti Climax
This sis a point in a narrative, following the climax or emotional high point, which lets down or deflates the experience, leaving the audience with a sense of disappointment.
=When Trife dies in the end.

B = Buddy Movie
This is a film that focuses on the relationship between two characters.
=The movie is based on both Alisa and Trife.

C = Cliff Hanger
A text which ends with an-resolved dilemma.
=Trife's death is made un-clear.

D = Demonisation
Sensational media reporting that turns individuals or groups into folk devils and makes them the focus of moral manic.
=All of the youths are represented in negative ways and link to negative stereotypes.

E = Ellipsis
The removal of shortening of elements of a narrative to speed up the action.
= Instead of long separate scenes of everyone, when Katie commits suicide, we see split screens of all the different characters.

F = Femme Fatale
A female character who uses her sexuality, to achieve the ends she desires.
= Becky decides to use oral sex as a way to get money for shopping.

G = Gangster
Describes a film genre based around the activities of a criminal gang/s.
=Trevors uncle is a gangster who is trying to influence his nephew to also lead a life of crime.

H = Hero
The principle male or female protagonist in any narrative.
=This is Trife, as this is a main story which is based around him.

L = Low-budget Film
A film made with limited funds.
=There was no major production company behind Kidulthood, as there would be in a massive Hollywood movie such as 'American Pie.'

M = Male Gaze
Laura Mulvey's theory of what she saw as the Male P.O.V
= Becky and Alisa are seen as sex objects on screen to entertain the male audience

Race Relations/Stereotypes

This link explains a little about what stereotypes really are and how they are not all negative stereotypes/ This will help me with my independent study because of the fact that most of my study is actually based around Stereotypes of youths.

Femme Fatale

This link explains where the word originated from. It is a term used to explain women who use their sexuality to gain what they need. This is wise information to use in terms of research and being able to Link it back to my actual study.

Young Male Adults

This link explains how youths are being attacked and demonised everyday over issues which could be a very small thing being turned into something major because of the fact that they want to target these youths in a negative way. This is an article which shows how there is nothing.

Teenage Males

This link is also an article form the Daily mirror. It talks about how a teenage boy shot down 7 people. This kind of relates to the text because of the fact that we could see Sam as the one to do something like this.

Represenation of Youths

This link shows basic information about how teenagers are being steretyped continuosly. They are continuously represented in negative ways and are seen as an easy target.

Blog Buddy Research

In order to make sure that our research task was carried out effectively, and that we would be able to benefit from this. Me and Jasmit decided to research on representation of women as our independant studies are based around this issue.
We both deicded to look at Laura Mulveys 'Male Gaze' theory in depth so we could relate what she thinks back to our text.

I found this link which explains what the gaze really is. This will be usuful to help with my text as i am foccussing on Becky. In kidulthood, it feels as if everythign that Becky does, is all for a purpose. And this pupose seems as though she is only there to entertain males.

Blog Buddies

My Blog buddy from our Class will be Jasmit. The reason i have chosen Jasmit as my blog buddy is because of the fact that we are both focussing on representation. The only difference is that Jaz is only foccusing on representation of teenage girls, whereas i am focussin on both male and females.
We will both focus on how the teenagers are influenced due to certain issues in society as well as our research also being similar as each others.
