ReSeaRch ProPoSaL

Main text - ‘Kidulthood
Title - ‘How are Stereotypes of Youths from Ethnical backgrounds shown in particular reference to Kidulthood?'
Hypothesis - There are many different stereotypes, Youths who are black are shown as typical 'Bad Boys' who are caught up in a world of crime. Girls are shown as more concerned about Sex, taking drugs and Underage drinking.
M – Characters are boys and girls, shown at school and a typical day for them. The movie is set in an urbanised area also referred to as 'The GHETTO'
I – Teenagers are all shown in negative ways. Boys are shown as more powerful over girls.
G - Drama
R – The representation of youths is shown in negative ways. They are all shown leading and following a life of crime.
A- Primary audience are teenagers who may relate to what happens in the movie. Parents are the secondary audience as they will see what youths of today are involved in.
I – BBC
N – The movie focuses on 7 individuals, Sam, Trife, Moony, Jay, Claire, Alisa and Becky. We get a chance to see how they live and the difficulties they all have to face.
Wider context
More issues are being raised in the society about how youths behave. The way they are shown behaving in Kidulthood would not be accepted today.
The representation of youths has changed so much since the past where all youths were concerned about was to gain a good education which would benefit them to have a good future, but this movie shows the complete opposite.
Theorists
Prop- The hero is Trife because he is shown as the protagonist. Trife faces many difficulties and has to go through rough times (mainly because of his uncle who is not a very good role model)
Levi Strauss - Binary Opposition is shown between Trife and Sam
Other texts:
Bullet Boy (2005) - Shows relevant issues, especially in the end when Ashley Walters is shot.
Get Rich Or Die Trying(2005) - Curtis Jackson is shown as a black male who struggles to make it big in the music industry. He is surrounded by stereotyped black males who do not want him to succeed. The film follows kidulthood as it involves gun crime and drugs.

Media Representations

Who is being represented?
"Teenagers from Different Etnical Backgrounds"
The text I have chosen is 'KiDULTHOOD' This movie shows us many different teenagers, from different backgrounds, all connecting to one another through different ways. There are many serious issues in this movie which will be seen as every-day-to day things for these teenagers.

In what way?
All the teenagers are shown in Negative ways. The girls are shown as sex objects and the boys are related to crime one way or another. Girls care more about sex than any thing else and the boys have adapted to a life of crime which they follow throught the course of the movie.

By whom?
Why is the subject being represented in this way?
The youths are shown in this way so that the audience can see how much has changed from the past. By showing the kids in a negative role we see how they are naive and influenced by the most stupidist things.

Is the representation fair and accurate?
Yes, we could say the representation is fair because it does cover teh issues going down in society today but then again it is not as it is not what is happening in every single area. it is not accurate because the movie only shows 1 part of similar people and covers there lives but does nto focus that much on others lives.
What opportunities exist for self-representation by the subject?

Media Languages and Forms
aunthenticity and relaism created by the shots used such as hig angled. Low key/hihgh key lighting is used to enhance this effect.

IntRo Of AliSa

Below is an image of Alisa. This is Trife's Girlfriend who has just found out she's pregnant. You Can see that she is taking a pregnancy test to confirm whether she is or not. We see Alisa come from a different ethical background compared to Becky, yet she is also involved partly in some of the things Becky and other teenagers are shown doing in the movie

BrieF OutLinE

It’s just another day at school for West London teenagers Trife (AML AMEEN) Jay (ADAM DEACON) and Moony (FEMI OYENIRAN): beatings in the classroom, sex on the playing field and drugs in the schoolyard. But things are about to flip sharply for this tight trio and their crowd. With school cancelled following the tragic suicide of bullied pupil Katie, the teenagers are all forced to face their own responsibilities and blame.

15-year-old Trife is facing a crossroads in his life. His uncle is tempting him with fast money, easy women and the gangster lifestyle; while his girlfriend Alisa (RED MADRELL) offers an escape to perhaps a better life. Trife must make a choice. But with word spreading that Alisa has slept with someone else, will he make the right one? Along with Jay and Moony, he also has the school bully Sam (NOEL CLARKE) to contend with. Sam is out for revenge after Jay steals his girlfriend Claire (Madeline Fairley) who he has been physically abusing and the threesome humiliate and beat him in his own house.

Trife’s girlfriend Alisa is also having a bad day. She’s just learnt that she’s pregnant. But her best friend Becky (JAMIE WINSTONE) is only interested in dragging her out on a drug and shopping binge. With the brother of dead Katie set on revenge and everyone heading to the same party, the scene is set for a decisive collision. It’s step up or back down time…

A harrowing, shocking story that finds humour in its narrative and set to a blistering UK Hip Hop and Grime soundtrack, KIDULTHOOD is a new kind of British film.

Based on real kids. Real stories. This is real life.

IntRo Of BecKy

This Image is of Becky, She is a really influential character in Alisa's life. Alisa is pressured into doing things because of Becky this is why Becky comes across as a negative character who does not support her best friend but instead is worried about who she will be having sex with next.

I decided to add this clip because i thought it was important that you see how teenagers from different ethical backgrounds may react to one another in everyday-to-day situations. This clip shows how Sam and his friends are intimidating Trife,Moony and Jay. We also see Katie being bullied by a group of Girls in the Classroom and others gathered around just watching.
The clip finishes when Jay goes into the shop and ends up throwing a beer bottle at the shop keeper because the shop keeper is not allowing him to purchase the beer.
All three of these clips are related as they all show violent behaviour which is being caused by youths from different ethical backgrounds

I decided to use this trailer, because it gives you a taster of everything which happens in the movie. From Teenagers as young as 15 causing trouble on the streets, to taking drugs, to teenage pregnancy. I thought this trailer will be the best to sum up the film as a whole.
